You should do a search and listen to Josh Turner tell his testimony as to why he's doing country music. It airs on CMT or GAC sometimes. It's during an acoustic set. It really chokes him up.
To me it's not much different than a Christian not working at a Christian school as a teacher but as a teacher at a public school. It presents more witnessing opportunities.
I love the Isaacs. I really do. I probably have 10 of their CD's - including their current "Naturally" almost acapella one.
But I always wonder why many Christian/Gospel singers mingle with the modern Country singers so much. What is the attraction - money or fame? I know they are all "artists" and "performers" trying to make good music to entertain. It seems that stories like this somehow validates what Christians believe/what we are doing because one of our own has made the mainstream of society.
I know that Sonya is married to a country guy now. I'm sure he is a Christian and a great guy. I hope Sony and other Christian musicians use their God-given talent for his glory.
I also know that Nashville is one big musical family of some country, Christian, and other talents. I just don't know if all this is pleasing to the Lord.
In the young career of Monument Quartet they have had the opportunity to perform at the West Virginia State Fair, the Winkler Harvest Festival in Winkler Manitoba Canada. They have performed at Silver Dollar City in Branson MO and Dollywood in Pidgin Forge TN. Monument's 2008 schedule boasts more than 70 fairs and Festivals including the New Jersey State Fair, Delaware State Fair, West Tennessee State Fair, West Missouri State Fair and returning to the West Virginia State Fair, the Punxsutawney Ground Hog Festival in PA and the National Peanut Festival in AL. With more than 40 dates already on hold for 2009 it is clear that these guys have already stolen the hearts of people all across the U.S. and are destined to become America's premier country quartet and variety entertainers.
Whatever happened to these people? I have a couple of their albums (Keep Your Eyes on the Master & Live! at Dry Valley) and would seriously like to know if they still sing or if they're involved in some musical aspirations. Thanks for any information!

As a small time quartet promoter in NW PA in the late 70's I have worked with several groups most not as well know as the BRQ I want any who may be reading this to know that the BRQ always treated me better than any group I promoted, Elmo was always so easy to work with and made it fun! Fred, Elmo, Bill & Burl were also very friendly and helpful, Even when I was part of an audience that I had no connection with they recognized me and Burl always gave me an album. Best of all being an aspireing singer I was greatly honored when the BRQ backed me up on "I Wouldn't Take nothing for my journey now. Thanks for the great memories, Jim

Accidentally ran across your name; I'm a devout Christian and sing too (non-professionally). :o)
For a time around 1970(could have been that year or a year either way)the Stamps, Ramobos, and the Oak Ridge Boys did a package tour called the Gospel Festival Show.
The highight of those shows was a play performed by members of all three groups called "The Three Nails". They weren't a "team" in the sense that the Blackwoods and Statesmen were, but this was a special package tour, not unlike the ones put together by the cast of the "Gospel Singing Jubilee" during that TV show's early years.
I believe the press release is referring to the original Imperials as the group that originated the name and those members who consequently joined the group as opposed to those incarnations that have popped up in the last few years.
Actually, Terry Blackwood was not part of the original Imperials. He replaced the group's founder, Jake Hess.

Seems like there has been several attempts to copy this "team" concept. Didn't the Kingsmen and Gold City do some dates together as KingsGold? And didn't the McKameys and Inspirations do some traveling as a tour team? Also I thought I could remember the Oak Ridge Boys, the Rambos and another group traveling together and even doing some singing/production/acting together.

and so did my Husband Brian who passed away 6 weeks ago ,Brian would watch the gaither Gospel hour here in Canada every
friday night Brian asked God into his Life on his 70th birthday he never came out of the hospital after having a kidney transplant and had many complications after,he had been sick for ten yrs,but I know where he is now and that I will see him one day,but I do miss him. God Bless Helen

His insights are surprisingly keen and he's very perceptive in his manner of analysis. And as you indicated, he does it because he just plain loves it.

I saw EHSS a couple months back and can honestly say I was entertained and uplifted all at the same time! Ill be honest, it did seem weird that i was at a southern gospel concert that wasn't overly "preachy". I go to concerts ALOT, perform in groups alot, and promote concerts...and after going to so many of the same types of "let's have church" concerts. It was really almost a different world, going to the EHSS concert. Loved It.
I really believe, if artists, pro and local alike, would get back to what makes southern gospel great then things would get stronger and stronger and more people would come out. Recently, I went and saw a singer, Michael Buble, in concert. Sold Out. Production was wonderful, the music was top notch, the band was fantastic. and the Singing was real. He was a great entertainer and had the audience eating out of his hand. Made me laugh because he was doing some old standards, but doing it fresh. I guess from the promoter side it hit me,why can't southern gospel do something like this - fresh, and captivating,entertaining and then point to Christ through the songs and through the program. We have the talent out there and I believe the resources to make our audiences latch on. Great thoughts!

Just a small correction - In "The Sunshine Boys performed on countless radio stations via their transcription services. They also worked with Cy Langworth and recorded several hundred songs for the Lang-Worth Transcription service." I'm quite sure that the Cy you've referred to is my great-uncle, Cyril Langlois. He, my Dad's Uncle Cy, had partnered with a Mr. Wentworth to create that business, hence the name "Lang-Worth."

Good blog on Canada. Americans (oops, there’s that reference again) are insensitive to, and even unaware of, their Northern neighbors. Over the years I too have referred to us as “United Statesians”, having the same frustration that we have taken possession of the term “Americans.” And you are absolutely correct in saying that the name belongs to two entire continents of people, not just us. We were just in Canada for a week and a half and I still love the land and the people.

The latest report from family members says Mike Bowling and six year old daughter, Katelanne.. appear to have sustained the most serious injuries as a result of a bus crash earlier today near Charlotte, NC. Reports say they were on the side of the bus that took the brunt of the impact,.. and were thrown forward. Family member Brian Lawing told our reporter: "Mike has a skull fracture, broken wrist, and lacerations. Kelly has a broken or crushed vertebrae and possible broken ankle. Katelanne's collar bone is broken in two places and she has a deep laceration on her face. The piano player has a broken ankle. The rest of the family/band/crew are all okay. Shaken up and bruised but praise God they are okay." Mike and Katelanne were airlifted to a nearby medical facility,.. the others were transported by ambulance to the same hospital. All involved are expected to make a complete recovery.
My prayers are with The Bowling Family & their extended families. May God reach down & heal them & strengthen them!

I remember so well riding in the back seat of the family car in the '60s on Sunday mornings listening to Don ring out on 'Give The World A Smile' on KMJ. Even living in the Bay Area in the '90s, I was able to pull in a scratchy KMJ to hear Don & Earline as he approached his final days.

Weston Hinson and By Faith have touched our lives with their music. I first heard Christy's Healed Perfect on line and it touch a deep part of my soul with words that helped me to understand there was another level of healing for families to embrace! When families are in those long days at the hospital the last thing they want is to lose their loved ones. Healed perfect answered questions for me, many years after the passing of my father.
My hubby and I had grown up on Hinson Music. We were Central Missourians and the Hinsons got their start by singing at Youth Camps in the Pentecostal Church of God. They still played churches such as Bro. BG Johnson. The last time we saw Kenny was at Silver Dollar City in 1980. We were there on our honeymoon. Years later when we heard Kenny had passed away, a whole lot of our hearts went with him.
One day while looking for Hinson Music, I clicked on Weston Hinson and By Faith and began talking to Christy. What an open loving person she is! We became friends and prayer partners pretty quick and then our hearts opened as friends and we just knew we were meant to be a part of Christy and Weston's Life. So we drove 8 hours to meet them for the first time in concert - the rest of this friendship and history has not been written yet. However, we are sure looking forward to what the Lord has in store.
I truly believe Weston sounds just like his Daddy. However, he's better looking than Kenny and the Original Hinsons. He's one great big Teddy Gear with a voice as smooth as silk! If you don't have their new CD you are really missing out!

Wayne, I believe you missed my point, or I failed to make it clear SGM is a dying and lost art for many different reasons. I love the music and will continue to sing gospel quartet music on a limited basis, when asked to do so. I dont think its a accurate comparision with respect to pasters, music ministers. As far as the laborer being worthy of their wages, try telling that to the church that your group drove 2 or more hours to perform who gives you a 100.00 love offering, however this is nothing new, its been goin on for years, its just a part of the SGM culture.

I have the misfortune to inform you all that "Red" Mathis, former tenor of the BRQ passed away in his sleep at 4:15AM on June 19, 2010. From all of us in his family we thank you for remembering him. At least he got to spend Father's Day with our Mom in Heaven.

Ron, you hit the point well. I kind of hit that point in the first paragraph but repeatition helps people remember. I said repeatition helps...what was I saying? Anyway.
CCM is a different crowd to a point. We do contemporary music along with our SG and you would be suprised how many of the 40-50+ year olds know the songs. CCM and SG both have a very good and direct message. Also CCM and SG have some songs that are so far off base when it comes to the Bible.
CCM gets the larger audience mainly because it's style is close to that of pop and progressive country. SG can do the same without destorting the message, but the age difference gets in the way. SG 35+ age group CCM 15-35 age group.
Sicko25 you are right. No matter which, good presentation is key. I think of John the Baptist. His presentation was very foward and to the point and everyone in that time knew who he was, Why? His actions and his look. He was different and easy to remember and you remembered what he said.. He also had the power of God most of all. That is the #1 thing that any CHristian performer needs.
I'm too young to remember much of the old groups (saw the Cathedrals one time on their farewell tour... I think I was 14), but a lot of current SG groups would do well to take some lessons from CCM. It's still the message of the Gospel that leads men to Christ, but the way you present the Gospel has a lot to do with it as well. I recently attended a concert with Mercy Me, Dave Crowder, and others. It blew away any SG production I have ever seen, Gaither included. I don't care a lot for the music, but their presentation was amazing. Their jokes aren't stale and 50 years old. Every move they make onstage is deliberate. They involve the crowd on every song. The energy had almost 10,000 people on their feet about half the time. And after thoroughly entertaining you, they genuinely present the Gospel or lead the crowd in some of the most heartfelt worship imaginable. And as a result, they sell out huge arenas while even some of the biggest name SG groups do well to halfway fill much smaller concert halls.
Anthony, I would add one bit to your comment, that I think would make your already-good comment even better:
"If they do the work that they are passionate about, and do it WELL, they should be paid."
Well, if groups minister through entertainment, it is clean fun. If they minister through the words of a song, it is clean music. Show biz is doing what you do with quality and excelence. Not just getting up there and telling a few jokes and doing some half hearted unrehersed singing. God gave his best and we are to do the same. Every group or soloist has to chart their own destiny and not try to be someone else. That is what sets anyone apart is that they are themselves and not the next so and so or just like so and so.
As far as doing it as a job for a paycheck, that is no different than any pastor or music minister. A workman is worthy of his or her hire. If they do the work that they are passionate about they should be paid. Yes sometimes it does get tough and a person gets up there and it only seems like a job sometimes. No different than pastors that have a 24/7/365 job and gets tired. I learned that lesson from a pastor friend of mine.

I find that Southern Gospel Music is just not relevant anymore to
main stream America, not sure that it ever was. Young mens dreams
and desires have affected the priorities of ministry, family and the
whole purpose of sharing the gospel through three minute pieces of majic.
Im afraid that merely adding
a bit of show biz will hardly solve the lack of support by the church
as a whole. There are a handful of groups in the industry today that I
would dare say have some ministry affect to their performance, but for the
most part its a paycheck, and more often than not, a small one.

We are all Christians and believe in God, but his whole attitude "totally changes" during all of your programs.Yes, we've talked to him about this, but it does us no good, so we've had to stay away from the house while your program is on. I have a different perspective of things & yet maybe it is very similar to what you are saying here in your article. I believe you would like to see SGM performers have more energy & passion for what they do.
For any singing group there is a recipe for success: 1 Cup - Pure God Given Tallent, 3/4 Cup - Discipline, 3/4 Cup - Respect, 1 Cup - Humility, 1/2 Cup Humor, 1 Cup - Passion, 1 1/2 Cups - Energy, 3 Tbs - Understanding, and 3 Tsp of Unity.
The perfect blend of ingredients and then we have a masterpiece.
If not, then the balance, blend, and overall effectiveness is immensely diminished.
You are definitely on target in stating "Today’s SGM provides little opportunity for the secular person, or the borderline Christian to be attracted to a concert." A sad, but true fact.
P.S. Some SGM artist would do themselves a favor to learn the definition of insanity . . . "Doing the same thing over and over again, and expecting different results." There is no silver bullet !
Scarlet, the title is "That's Enough," and it's found on Jake Hess and the Imperials (1964).
John, I was about to point out that was revealed by Duke.
But, one thing I would like to mention is that even in the '60s the Imperials were contemporary. Some of their songs had the same sound as what you'd hear on a top-40 station. So they were pioneers of contemporary Christian music before there was such a genre. And when the CCM industry came about, they were ready for it.
I want to wish Jimmy the best in his new endeavors. He brought a unique sound to 2nd Generation that will be hard to replace. I know the girls will do just fine. Change is inevitable in a Southern Gospel group. I'm looking forward to hearing the new sound of 2nd Generation.

For clarification....Scott is correct, we do not promote the southern gospel market and to clear some things up, Sunday Drive Ministry is the southern gospel "Sunday Drive". I have talked to Eric Baker of Sunday Drive Ministry and we are good, so why does everyone else have a problem? And Ken, I do not follow the southern gospel world and only found out they were using the name last November. By that time, we both had a lot of time and money invested. We are both doing what God has called us to do - to be a LIGHT in the darkness. The Bakers are great people and we pray for GOD's Blessings on them.
This might be splitting hairs here, but wasn't the Kentucky group known as Sunday Drive Ministries? Jeff has used the name Sunday Drive for a few years doing the Christian Country thing, and I believe he did actually say something when they started using Sunday Drive.
I don't think it will be that huge of a deal as some people are making it, simply because Jeff's target audience is the Christian Country audience, and even though he has dabbled a little bit in the Southern Gospel arena, that's not been his focus...at least for the past few years.

Yeah i also know that group, Sunday Drive, Eric and Charlotte Baker of Ky...........2 of the memmebrs were with Son's Family...They are Sunday Drive now and have been for a while....

The only Sunday Drive that I know is from Kentucky and has been singing over a year with 2 national radio releases and got a pretty good name here in Southeastern Kentucky. I have played music by the Jeff Treece Band and have been a fan of them since the Cedar Ridge days, but seems like if someone has the name...you wouldn't pick the same name. Kindof reminds me of the Karen Peck & New River song, "Why Can't All God's Children Get Along."

I think it would depend on the inspiration for a song. I have only written a few, but they have always been either from some personal experience, or God inspired, It is hard for me to just sit down and write a song so I have something new!
